How to Prepare for a Walmart Line Review

A 90-day framework covering buyer deck structure, competitive shop methodology, and same-week sample logistics, from someone who has been in the room.

Why most line review prep fails

The most common failure mode is treating the line review as a presentation event rather than a market story event. Walmart buyers are not evaluating your product in isolation. They are evaluating your product's role in their category plan. If you can't articulate what gap you fill, the answer is no.

The 90-day framework

T-90: Shop the category. Before you build a single slide, spend a day in the Walmart stores relevant to your category. Document the shelf, the pricing, the facing counts, and the white space. This is the raw material your story is built from.

T-60: Build the buyer deck. The deck tells three stories in sequence: the category opportunity (what's happening in the market), your brand's unique position (why you win the white space), and the ask (specific items, price points, door count, and volume commitment). Every claim needs a source.

T-30: Prepare your samples. Samples should arrive in Bentonville ready for a buyer to handle — labeled correctly, in retail-ready packaging, with the pricing and item UPC visible. If you're shipping from out of town, build in 5–7 days for Bentonville receipt and prep.

T-7: Run a dry run. Present to someone who will ask the hard questions: Why are you the right brand for this slot? What happens if the buyer asks for a lower entry price? What's your velocity assumption, and what data supports it?
